How to clean your diamond jewellery at home

Cleaning and maintenance of your most precious things can be easily done at home, you will be surprised how much everyday dirt such as creams, soap or bits from the last Bake-off get stuck underneath your diamond!
While keeping your hands clean by using antibacterial solutions and wipes, this doesn't mean your ring gets cleaner by applying layers and layers of it...

Having worked with diamonds and in customer service for more than two decades I'm always happy to share my experience with my clients when it comes to maintaining their engagement or eternity rings.

When my clients ask me how they can clean their diamond rings I suggest the following:

  • Ideally use a medium size plastic bowl, fill it with a bit of warm to hot water. If placed in the sink make sure the plug is in to avoid dropping your ring in there accidentally

  • Use a soft bristled manual toothbrush which ideally should be new, no traces of toothpaste or other things on it. In the age of electric toothbrushes most households have spare “manual operated” ones hidden in cupboards so now is their time to shine!

  • Put a few drops of washing up liquid straight onto the bristles, dip said into the warm water and brush the bristles in and around all of the stone(s) - including the backs of the stones, some settings are open from underneath and collect a lot of cream, skin-cells, cookie-dough and everything else that gets collected. A little poke and brush will make you see the difference immediately.

  • Rinse the ring first in the bowl and then under clear water, remember to put the plug into the sink Pat-dry it with some kitchen-towel and if you happen to have one at hand, a small spray of canned air, I use those for keyboard cleaning, available from any stationery shops. This blows out any “solids” the toothbrush couldn't reach and excess water from underneath the diamonds.

Repeat this every other week and you will never loose the sparkle!
